San José del Cabo is the Los Cabos municipal government seat and is known as the more tranquil of the two larger cities in Los Cabos. It is home to an internationally protected wetland estuary, the culmination of the freshwater river that flows from the mountains. As such it has historically been a stopping point for Spanish navigators, missionaries and pirates. The Mission San José del Cabo Anuiti is part of the active town square, which is surrounded by plenty of shops and restaurants. Downtown San José del Cabo is home to a spectacular Gallery District with a lively Thursday Night Art Walk where galleries offer snacks or drinks and often have artists on hand to meet and greet. In high season there is a local organic and craft market with over 100 vendors. The international airport is in San José del Cabo.
