Toys have always been part of our very first contact and interactivity with the world. Ever since we begin to gain motor skills, our bodies, perceiving motions, gaining strength, start expanding those limits through toys and plays. We experience reality from the beginning, shadowing it through games, abstracting life’s essence in simple manners that help us perceive not only society’s rules and boundaries, but our limitless imagination to create. Before the industrial revolution, handcrafted toys used to be whatever our imagination could make a simple stick be. Ever since it arrived fun and games have been ruled by the market and society’s mass conception of children and the games they should play. Handcrafted toys remain a trace of past cultures that have been slowly replaced by technology and an expanding globalized view. Every culture creates a world around children which bends a child’s natural imagination, but also creates identity within that same culture.
This exhibition aims to go back to the roots of the Mexican toy culture, making it the essence of the works, letting handcrafted pieces be whatever the artists imagination chooses it to be or whatever memories of their childhood were left behind. Although we might not know the true origins of toys, we know they were created by our endless imagination to experience and to seek life beyond our reality.
